The Savegre Mountain Hotel, also known
as Cabinas Chacón, is located in San Gerardo de
Dota, a small community in the Talamanca
mountains of Costa Rica in the midst of a
precious ecosystem... Here you will find a deep
cloud forest filled with massive oaks and other
native species. The woods serve as a sanctuary
for a large number of mammals and innumerable
species of insects, amphibians, amazing plants,
and colorful birds, a paradise for birdwatchers.
As you wind around Cerro de la Muerte on the
Interamerican Highway, you will see the lush
vegetation become stunted and then diminish. The
turn off for San Gerardo de Dota is on Kilometer
80, driving for 9 kilometers down on a well
mantained gravel road you reach this narrow,
pristine mountain valley at 2200 meters of
altitude (7220 ft). San Gerardo de Dota has
become a paradise for birdwatchers, hikers, and
trout fishers.
Don Efraín Chacón and his
family arrived here in 1954 and were the first
pioneers settling down in this valley. The
Chacón Family not only have developed this
wonderul hotel, but have over the course of the
years take advantage of the crisp weather to
grow apples, plums, and peaches, which you
sample in meals. Rainbow trout abound in the
Savegre River which is great for fly fishing.
Over 170 bird species have been observed in the
area and its multiple hiking trails in the Cloud
Forest. This is known as one of the best places
in the country to observe Resplendent Quetzals,
who live here year around The Hotel hosts the
Quetzal Education Research Center Complex
(QERC), a cooperative venture between the Chacón
Family and Southern Nazarene University in
Oklahoma.

El Toucanet Lodge
offers you spectacular views and personalized
service, in a comfortable rustic atmosphere,
only one and a half hours from San José on good
roads. The valley, the cloud forest and over 200
bird species make this area similar to
Monteverde, and is an excellent place to stop
and relax to break up the long drive to the
southern beaches and National Parks of Costa
Rica.
From San José, get
on the Interamerican highway south (route 2)
pass by the cartago entrance staying on the
highway until you reach km. 51, El Empalme turn
right to Santa Maria de Dota At the park turn
left 7 kilometers to Copey, at the soccer field
turn right straight to El Toucanet about 1.5 km.
Or at km. 58 turn right 8 km to Copey (dirt
Road).

Trogon Lodge is located in San Gerardo
de Dota, near Cerro de la Muerte, Costa Rica's
highest peak. The drive takes approximately 02
hours from San José heading southeast in the
Pan-American highway. As one drives up,
marvelous views appears before your eyes, carrot
& potato plantations, the country side, and
on a clear day, general overviews of the Cartago
Province and Valley.
Admidst dazzling
flowers, showing amazing shades of colors and
where centennial oak trees show their impressive
roots sits Trogon Lodge, at an altitude of 7000
ft above sea level, surrounded by the unspoiled
ecology of the area.
The song of the
Resplendet Quetzal, in it's magical fly, is a
sample of the exuberant biodiversity that lives
in the area. A collage of green trees and
mountains. A peaceful setting enhanced by the
sounds of the river in its endless travel
through the rocks, lets you fell nature and see
it come alive, in a place where the mist of the
